The One and Twos: Kermit, Irvin, and The Golden Record V.1 is the first in a new series of graphic novels written by English author and New Orleans music fan, Amen Neville and illustrated by Henry Lipkis. The story features Kermit Ruffins & Irvin Mayfield battling a great dark force in New Orleans, and is a companion piece to the album A Beautiful World.
Amen Neville is a British-born writer and music enthusiast. He developed an affinity for New Orleans music after discovering records of Ernie K-Doe, Preservation Hall, Louis Armstrong, and The Meters within his fatherʼs hand-me-down collection of vinyl LPs. After dropping out of the London School of Economics and Political Science, Neville began spending a great deal of time at Gosh!, a nearby bookstore. There, while obsessing over the work of American writers Harvey Pekar, Alex Robinson, and Will Eisner, thoughts of a cross-Atlantic adventure were spawned. Soon after, Neville found himself in New Orleans, drawn by both the local music and the similarities in culture to his parentsʼ home of Kingston. He now splits his time between New Orleans and London while working on a longer form novel and vinyl DJ sets.
Henry Lipkis is a muralist and community artist working with cultural pockets across New Orleans. He graduated with a BFA from California College of Art and began traveling the world painting murals in towns and street art festivals. When he came to New Orleans he quickly became close with 9th ward Mardi Gras Indians and began working with them to design their intricate beadwork suits. Across the city Lipkis has used his murals to collaboratively tell stories, be it with the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, the Presbyterian Church, or the local Drag scene.
