Last night, Mark Samuels, the president of Basin Street Records, was given the opportunity to discuss hydrogen sulfide removal with Melanie Hebert on The 504 on WUPL TV (WWL TV’s sister station). Along the way he also talked about Wynton Marsalis; Ben Franklin High School; the Cutting Edge Music Business Conference, creating the label with Kermit Ruffins’ manager, Tom; his brother Will stepping up when he needed help the most; driving from Austin to New Orleans 29 times in 9 months; and tonight’s benefit concert for the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp.

Best Record Label and Music Business of the Year!

Last night Basin Street Records was awarded the OffBEAT Best of the Beat Business Awards for Best Record Label and Music Business of the Year!

From the Rebirth Brass Band’s Grammy win for their Rebirth of New Orleans CD, to Theresa Andersson’s ride in Muses and 50 shows in Sweden and her Street Parade CD, to Irvin Mayfield & the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s first trip to Carnegie Hall, to Kermit Ruffins, his new speakeasy and his EP The Other Side, to Dr.Michael White’s fine new release Adventures in New Orleans Jazz Pt.2, to Jeremy Davenport’s 150+ shows, to Rebirth’s opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to Dr.Michael White and Jason Marsalis ringing in 2013 on CNN, it was a great year.

New Year’s Eve on CNN: Dr.Michael White & Jason Marsalis

Basin Street Records’ artists Dr.Michael White and Jason Marsalis will be interviewed by Brooke Baldwin on CNN on New Year’s Eve in the half hour leading up to New Year central time. Dr.Michael White released Adventures in New Orleans Jazz, Part 2 in 2012, and Jason Marsalis will release In A World Of Mallets on February 19, 2013.

Dr.Michael White was named Humanist of the Year by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, and received the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship.

Jason Marsalis received the National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz Master award with his musical father Ellis, and brothers Branford, Wynton and Delfeayo.

Both Jason and Michael were named to Downbeat Magazine’s recent Critics’ and Readers’ polls!

15 Years Ago We Signed Our First Artist

Today (Monday, October 22, 2012) is the 15th anniversary of the signing of the first Basin Street Records’ recording contract. It was a contract with Kermit Ruffins to record a pair of records, the first of which was recorded on November 14, 1997 in front of a packed house at Tipitina’s.  That recording was later named The Barbecue Swingers Live and was released in February 1998.


Please join Kermit Ruffins and Basin Street Records when we return to the scene of that first recording, Tipitina’s, at 501 Napoleon Ave. in New Orleans, on Friday, November 16th, 2012 to celebrate 15 years and a dozen projects together.
